Bird Mills and Chain Pet Stores

Many bird owners think buying a “new” bird will prevent bad behaviors. Don’t be fooled. With the problem of bird milling, many birds are moved from mill, to pet store, to owner, only to end back up as breeders at bird mills because they were ruined before they were purchased. Commercial breeding creates chicks with socialization and behavior problems that result in feather plucking and screaming issues later.
Avian rescue centers break the cycle of bird milling. Since most birds live between 20 and 80 years, rescue centers are a better option: you can select the age of bird you are most comfortable with and you are educated on how to keep that particular bird in its optimal state.

There are thousands of birds available for adoption from Parakeets to African Greys. A legitimate rescue center will have high standards of care and be fully educated on each bird and species they work with.
