Non-Stick Cookware

Just as many parrot owners know about the dangers of non-stick cookware as not. Everyday a new parrot owner has just brought home their first avian companion without giving a second thought to the many dangers that are already working against a satisfying relationship with their bird. And, by parrot I mean budgies and cockatiels that many people think are more resistant to household dangers than larger birds, which is not at all true. ALL BIRDS can die from the fumes given off every time you use non-stick cookware.

Okay, so what do you do with a $10 budgie and the $200 set of cookware your hubby just purchased for Christmas last year? BE REALISTIC.  You are not going to get rid of the cookware because it makes your life easier. But at the same time, please respect your bird's lungs by:
  • Keeping non-stick cookware at medium temperatures and below all pans, broilers, toaster ovens, etc.
  • If you need to use high temps for sauteing use Pam and STAINLESS STEEL; it taste better anyway.
  • Move your bird's house to another room with a treat and snack to keep him busy while you cook. Let's face it, he knows you are cooking something good and will want some.
  • Use the hood fan on your stove when you cook. I do every time, just to be safe.
  • Open the window in the kitchen and turn the ceiling fan on in the living room while you are cooking.
  • If you have done these things, you have reduced  a potential and serious problem that will prevent you from finishing a wonderful meal only to find your budgie feet up on the bottom of the cage.
Be a responsible pet guardian by making responsible choices.
