Natural Beak Care

Wooden toys in an age of plastic and metal ones may seem old fashioned, but a good friend of mine who boards birds in NYC says they are necessary for natural beak care. They are also environmentally friendly. So, the next time you are browsing the toy selection, consider how natural toys can simulate your bird’s natural environment. In turn, they will stimulate your bird’s natural behaviors to chew and stay active.

If your bird forages, use natural newspaper to make seed/pellet packets that he can break open or “find” hidden among his favorite chew toys. Revamp tired wooden perches with leather strings to encourage your parrot to chew until his beak’s content. Many times parrot owners forget that some parrots (as mine does) simply like the way it feels to have their beak scratched. Wooden toys that they can feel accomplished in destroying helps soothe that need.
