Feeding Fresh Veggies Daily with Ease

With all the pressure of feeding a fresh veggies, it can be overwhelming to find and keep veggies our feathered friends enjoy eating, shredding and foraging on. So, to make things a bit easier, try being brave and experimental. When you are out buying groceries don't be afraid to try new flavors and textures when passing the produce aisle.

1. Purchase 2 or 3 fresh Brussels sprouts
2. Purchase 1 cup of fresh sugar snap peas
3. Purchase 1 bag of carrots
4. Purchase a small bundle of kale

Total Cost: $5 (maybe).
Total Enjoyment Time: Five days

Place whole washed carrots, sugar snap peas and Brussels sprouts whole in the bottom of the cage. This will simulate root foraging in the parrot's native environment.

Hang washed, leafy greens from cage tops and sides for shreddable leaves with nutritious value.

Day 1:  1 carrot, two sugar snap peas and hang one leaf of kale from the cage side
Day 2:  1 carrot, one Brussels sprout and chopped peas in the bowl
Day 3:  1 carrot, two sugar snap peas etc. You get the idea.

Next week try fresh pomegranate seeds, celery stalks (which reduce protein build up in the kidneys) and whole radishes.

Remember, just because you may not like a particular vegetable doesn't mean your parrot has to go without the flavors, textures and nutrients that will make him happy and healthy.

Also, know that many bird advertisements show one parrot with an overflowing bowl of veggies and fruits. One parrot will not eat that much, so be realistic about how much to feed. If your parrot is shredding all you give him and is healthy, keep that amount and just rotate the flavors. If he is not touching half of what you give him, reduce the amount by half.

NEVER FEED: Chocolate, avocados, fruit seeds or poor quality produce to your bird. And some budgie owners do not feed cabbage family produce, which does include Brussels sprouts. When in doubt about food restrictions for a specific breed of bird, ALWAYS ask your vet.
